Anti-tobacco Initiative Launches National Smokeless Tobacco Collection Drive to Commemorate the Great American Smokeout

Operation Tobacco Free kicks-off “Ditch the Dip” campaign to inspire smokeless tobacco users to quit.

Operation Tobacco Free (OTF)—a prosocial initiative sponsored by TeaZa® Energy—is launching a national campaign called “Ditch the Dip” to encourage people to refuse to use tobacco products and commemorate the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout. OTF is a prosocial initiative launched in 2015 that discourages tobacco use and inspires healthy lifestyles through education and community outreach. During its first year, OTF has proudly donated tens of thousands of dollars in product and sponsorships to youth sports teams, health programs and even a tobacco de-addiction study in partnership with a nonprofit chapter at a major university, Project RISHI at the University of Southern California (USCPR).

The “Ditch the Dip” campaign kicked-off with a “dip drive” collection event Friday, October 28, 2016 at US Patriot Tactical located at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, FL. At the event, OTF representatives gave away free TeaZa® Energy—a tobacco-free, nicotine free, smokeless tobacco alternative—in exchange for unopened cans of unused smokeless tobacco.

“It seemed appropriate to launch the campaign at the base given that tobacco addiction is known to affect a high percentage of active military personnel and veterans,” said Brent Agin, MD, President and CEO of TeaZa® Energy.

According to a 2011 survey published by the Department of Defense, close to half of all military service members (49.2%) used a nicotine product in the past 12 months.¹

The same survey found in 2011, 12.8 percent of all military personnel reported using a smokeless tobacco product in the past month, compared to 3.2 percent of the general population at that time.²

The Ditch the Dip campaign is focused on reaching the estimated 9 million smokeless tobacco users in the US.³

“Most anti-tobacco campaigns focus on smoking. We are passionate about raising awareness of the health dangers associated with smokeless tobacco use,” Dr. Agin said. His inspiration to support the anti-tobacco movement grew from consumer response to his innovative TeaZa® Energy pouches. David Wells Announced as Ambassador for National Anti-Tobacco Initiative

TeaZa® Energy’s Operation Tobacco Free names former major league baseball pitcher David Wells as the first ambassador in their OTF Hall of Fame.

TeaZa® Energy, LLC announces today the ambassadorship of former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher, David Wells, for their prosocial initiative, Operation Tobacco Free (OTF). Wells is the first member of OTF’s own “Hall of Fame” which will feature other prominent figures and community leaders. Wells played in the major leagues for 20 years with several teams including the Toronto Blue Jays and is best known for pitching the 15th perfect game in baseball history when playing for the New York Yankees. By lending his name and support to the campaign, Wells hopes to spread the message to kids in youth sports that it’s not hip to dip.

The campaign is focused on reaching smokeless tobacco users including some 535,000 kids age 12-17 who try smokeless tobacco for the first time each year in the US.¹

“I am committed to being part of the movement to get tobacco out of youth sports,” Wells said.

Anti-smoking campaigns have sparked dramatic declines in US smoking populations from 42% of American adults in 1964 at the time of the first Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Health, to 18% of American adults in 2014² at the time CVS removed all tobacco products from the shelves of all its 7,700 retail locations.³

But these efforts have not focused on smokeless tobacco use, which has remained steady among youth and adult populations.

A recent survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that the use of smokeless tobacco among youth has held steady since 1999. In 2013, 14.7 percent of high-school boys reported current use of smokeless tobacco products.⁴

“A lot of kids don’t even realize that dipping is highly addictive and causes major health problems. As a coach, I’m hoping I can influence kids to refuse to use tobacco in the first place,” said Wells who now serves as head coach of his alma mater’s baseball team at Point Loma High School in San Diego, California.

Being a veteran of the major leagues, Wells understands how deeply ingrained smokeless tobacco use is in baseball culture.

Some research indicates as many as 50% of high school athletes use smokeless tobacco on the baseball field at the JV and varsity level.⁶

In 2003, more than 1 in 3 major league baseball players used smokeless tobacco. Athletes are a large marketing source for smokeless tobacco, often seen on TV using it during a game.⁷

But baseball is starting to do an about-face on tobacco use.

The 2014 parotid cancer related death of MLB Hall of Famer and smokeless tobacco user Tony Gwynn, inspired conversations about change in tobacco use in baseball.

In April, San Francisco made history by becoming the first city to take tobacco out of baseball by signing into law an ordinance to prohibit the use of all tobacco products at all baseball venues and athletic fields within the city and county of San Francisco, including by fans and players. As of September, Boston and Los Angeles have also enacted similar laws.⁸

Wells became interested in supporting OTF through his friendship with Brent Agin, MD, Founder and CEO of TeaZa® Energy and Operation Tobacco Free. Dr. Agin’s inspiration to support the anti-tobacco movement grew from consumer response to his innovative TeaZa® Energy pouches. The tobacco about-face is being felt across America.

Anti-tobacco campaigns have successfully whittled down the smoking population from 42% of American adults in 1964 at the time of the first Surgeon General’s Report on Smoking and Health, to 18% of American adults in 2014² at the time CVS removed all tobacco products from the shelves of all its 7,700 retail locations.³

While cigarette smoking is on a sharp decline, smokeless tobacco use has remained steady among youth and adult populations.

From 1998 to 2011, the top-five smokeless tobacco companies in the US more than tripled total advertising and marketing expenditures.⁶

To determine the name of TeaZa® Energy’s newest edition, the company ran a, “Name That Flavor” contest that received nearly 250 entries.  The prize-winning name was actually a combination of two entries—Bangin’ Black Cherry and Black Cherry Bomb.  Two winners were selected.  Each will receive a free tray of TeaZa® Energy in their flavor choice.

The new packaging is available immediately to customers online and is being gradually phased-in to retail locations.

The dynamic packaging is designed to enhance the value and brand awareness of TeaZa Energy. Brand presence in multiple markets has been growing since Trim Nutrition, Inc.—a medical company headquartered in Clearwater, FL that develops and manufactures high-quality dietary supplements—launched the product in 2012.

  1. I have been using Copenhagen for 40 years my wife and daughters were on me since I revieved a kidney transplant back in 2006 to quit chewing Copenhagen . Well no luck with that my lovely wife found your GREAT product and ordered some for me it has been a month with no Copenhagen I don’t miss it at all. Thank you for this great product and I am tobacco free.
