Physician Warns Millennials: Beware of Beasts and Winged-Bulls

What’s the daily get-up-and-go routine of today’s active, American 20-something?  Roll out of bed and fuel-up with a strong cup of Joe—to get the motor running, chug an energy drink in the afternoon to get through the mid-day blahs and finish off the day with an athletic performance-enhancing supplement before hitting the gym.  Sound familiar?

Millennials have formed a daily habit of using of energy drinks and supplements.  A growing body of scientific evidence indicates a significant increase in health problems resulting from energy drink consumption particularly in adolescents and young adults.

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) Report, the number of emergency department visits involving energy drinks doubled from 2007 to 2011.  Consistently, the majority of these patients are male, aged 18-25 years old.  This report also notes a significant number of cases where patients are either mixing energy drinks with alcohol or engaging in a strenuous activity during use.

Given that the marketing campaigns of companies like Red Bull and Monster—number one and two in the energy drink market respectively—feature young individuals, extreme sports stunts and promises to “give you wings” and “unleash the beast,” why wouldn’t people think they are supposed to work out and party with the beast or winged-bull in hand?

Leading physicians consistently warn of the diuretic effects of highly-caffeinated energy drinks.

“Beverages and supplements with caffeine levels higher than what is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) are perfect examples of what to avoid when exerting yourself,” says Brent Agin, M.D., a family practice physician who specializes in wellness, nutrition and disease prevention.

Dr. Agin’s Clearwater Florida based medical company, Trim Nutrition, created a unique supplement—TeaZa Energy—as a safe alternative to energy drinks, shots and supplements on the market.

“The Millennial generation is faced with intense pressure for academic, career and social success.  They love TeaZa Energy because it provides smooth energy and focus with no crash.  The ingredients are natural and completely safe to use during exertion,” says Dr. Agin.
